Donor heeds call for support, makes gift to library
“I encourage everybody to make a contribution or a gift of their time,” says Adam Press. He has followed his own advice, serving as one of the co-hosts of the West Hollywood Library Fund's reception for the LGBT community held at the Panorama at the Andaz West Hollywood on February 22, 2010. Building on the momentum of that event, Adam recently made a personal gift in support of Library Park.
Adam first became involved with the library at the encouragement of his long-time friend and West Hollywood Library Fund Board member Christopher Rice, an author and West Hollywood resident who is an enthusiastic promoter of the campaign for LibraryPark.
While Adam now calls Los Angeles home, he is a native of Walnut Creek in northern California. He attended college in Colorado and lived in Washington, DC, New York City, London and Paris before settling in Southern California.
Adam's support for LibraryPark is just one of the many ways he gives back to his community. He has served on the Board of Trustees of Colorado College, his alma mater, for about five years. He also serves on the Board of Jewish Vocational Services, which will operate the Wells Fargo Career Development Center in the new library, and is a supporter of Equality California, a group dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT individuals.
Thank you, Adam, for your support of Library Park!
The Design Reference Collection - A Valuable Community Resource
Donors to the Legends of Design campaign will be acknowledged on a special plaque in the Art and Design reference collection. This collection within the larger reference section is expected to contain nearly 1000 books on design and the decorative arts and to be especially valuable to the large number of people living and working in West Hollywood who are employed in the fields of art and design. Given the new library's proximity to the Pacific Design Center, this will be an invaluable resource for local designers, shop owners, antique dealers, distributors and design enthusiasts.
Users of the art and design reference collection will have access to the services of the larger reference section: internet access, copying, technology workstation, reading space, study rooms and a staff to provide information and technical assistance.
Construction Report
During the month of April, the construction of the library progressed as workers placed the concrete foundation for the library plinth parking garage. The concrete topping slab for the tennis courts now sits on top of the 5-story parking structure. As the crew continues with the interior wall construction, spaces within the building are becoming more clearly defined. Installation of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems continues, as does another important process - waterproofing the perimeter of the structure below the ground level. Several public utilities -- water, sewer and gas -- performed major work beneath San Vicente Boulevard to connect the new library to their existing systems.

Design Community Shows Support for West Hollywood Library Fund
West Hollywood Library Fund's Legends of Design campaign kicked off at a reception at the Brueton LA showroom, generously hosted by owner Tom Hammond on Thursday, May 8. West Hollywood designers and industry leaders were among the more than 60 guests who toured the Melrose Avenue showroom while sampling an Asian-inspired menu. West Hollywood Library Fund design outreach committee chair Rocky LaFleur and members Genevieve Morrill and Carol Poet wowed the crowd with plans for the new library's special collections and dedicated space for educational, trade and cultural events that can showcase the local design community.
This event was part of the La Cienega Design Quarter Walk, an annual two-day tour through the heart of the Los Angeles design community between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue and environs, when some of the most innovative shops and galleries hold special programs and exhibits for members of the design community.
As visitors gathered around the scale model of the new library building on display in Brueton's front window, West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman welcomed them and introduced Rocky LaFleur, who spoke about the benefits that LibraryPark will bring to the design committee, including a stellar design reference collection. Architect Jim Favaro of MDA Johnson Favaro, designers of the new library, then elaborated on his design approach. Designer and committee member Carol Poet concluded this portion of the evening with an invitation for guests to join West Hollywood's “Legends of Design” by making a $150 contribution to the capital campaign. Donors will be listed on a special plaque in the Art & Design Reference Collection.
We would like to thank contributors to the Legends of Design campaign. We would also like to thank our corporate partners, Brueton LA, Oncourse Productions, Seyie Design, Du Vin, Sushi Roku, Empty Vase and Water Loft, who helped to make this event a success.
