Features
A Place to Celebrate the LGBT CommunityA special component of the new library is an extensive collection of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) literature, history and personal materials. For people living with HIV/AIDS, the West Hollywood Library includes an expanded Ron Shipton HIV Information Center, offering current and accurate HIV and AIDS education materials in a setting that respects privacy.
A Place that Expands Green Space and Demonstrates Our Environmental Values
The West Hollywood Library and its surrounding green space are the community center and civic commons that West Hollywood deserves. Special areas are available for public proclamations, celebrations, fairs and festivals, as well as smaller events that occur on a regular basis, like brown bag lectures or midday concerts. The West Hollywood Library has achieved a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver rating and is the most sustainable building the city could produce within the bounds of the site. Green options for the Library include a photovoltaic system (using solar cells to convert energy from the sun into electricity); materials for paints, coatings and carpeting with low VOCs (volatile organic compounds); optimized energy performance systems (lighting, heating and ventilation); and the use of "green" housekeeping products.
A Place for Jobseekers and the Business Community
The West Hollywood Library fills important needs of both employers and jobseekers. The Wells Fargo Career Development Center provides resources for local startup businesses and community development advocates, including assistance in learning entrepreneurial skills and discovering methods of raising capital. For people seeking work or a career change, the library can help open doors to employers and specialized job training.
A Place for Lifelong Learning
Adults will find our new library to be a road to personal development, adventure and a richer life. Lectures, author readings and exhibits will be a major component of the library's programs.
A Place for Communication and Discovery
By offering free access to computers, the West Hollywood Library brings opportunity to all. The Stuart Feigin Technology Area offers Internet-accessible computers, along with copiers, printers and fax machines placed throughout the library, for patrons to conduct research, write resumes, keep in touch with family and friends, and complete assignments for school or work.
A Place for West Hollywood History and Culture
The West Hollywood Library serves as a steward of local history and a repository of our community's collective memory. In addition to housing archives and historical collections, the library engages people of all ages through storytelling, multicultural festivities, and exhibits celebrating many cultures.
A Place Where Learning Comes Alive for Children and Young Adults
The West Hollywood Library provides a window on the world to children and young adults. The children's area features a theater-within-a-library for storytelling, puppet shows and library fun. A separate young adult section provides space for teens to work and learn together. The West Hollywood Library gives our children a place to develop a love of reading, a quest for knowledge and a thirst for lifelong learning.
